Fresh Meat Productions asked the 2019 Fresh Meat Festival artists some questions. Read what they had to say in their own words!
Shawna Virago
SHAWNA VIRAGO is a songwriter celebrated for her striking lyric-based songs. Virago was one of the nation’s first openly transgender women to perform and tour nationally, and has performed as an out transwoman since the early 1990’s.
Q: Why is it important to have a festival that centers trans and queer performance?
A: I think the Fresh Meat Festival is important, not only for centering trans, gender non-conforming and queer communities, but also for having an intersectional lens with the artists presented. All the artists provide a living rebuke to the current administration’s constant attacks on our communities, and they do so by also making really great art.
Q: What’s one thing you wish for trans and queer communities?
A: Yes, we are changing the world, but I want us to show up for each other, to walk alongside each other’s struggles.
Q: Who are some of your artistic inspirations?
A: The list of my artistic inspirations is so long, it would fill a library.
Shawna will perform all three nights of the FRESH MEAT FESTIVAL June 20, 21, 22
