Award-winning transgender choreographer Sean Dorsey has won audiences and accolades from San Francisco to New York with his powerful dance theater that provides a window into transgender and queer experience. Dorsey’s work is a fusion of dance, storytelling and theater and has gained national attention for demystifying modern dance with his highly accessible, deeply moving work that is followed by transgender, queer and straight audiences alike.

At this special Expanding the Circle Conference Presentation, Dorsey will perform and present video excerpts from his acclaimed show Uncovered: The Diary Project, an evening of dances that incorporate text from actual, real-life diaries of transgender and queer people.

The show is the culmination of a year-and-a-half long community research process in which Dorsey uncovered and researched diaries of transgender and queer people – from the famous to the unknown. Uncovered features Lost/Found, the story of a transman vicariously living the boyhood he never got to have when he finds a young boy’s diary; and Lou, a suite of dances based on the lifelong journals of Lou Sullivan (1951-1991), a pioneering transgender activist.

Dorsey and company dancer Brian Fisher will perform Lost/Found, and will present Lou on video. Dorsey’s artist talk will address his journey as a transgender dance artist and the role of cultural activism in the movement for transgender and queer justice and visibility. Generously sponsored by the California Institute for Integral Studies.
