Generations Positive is a traveling LGBTQ community engagement program by Sean Dorsey Dance.
Artistic Director Sean Dorsey and the company conduct week-long or custom-length residencies that include free workshops, classes and community forums. These free activities create opportunities for transgender, gender-non-conforming, LGBTQ, HIV+ and allied people to dance, learn, talk, share and build community.
Generations Positive residencies travel with Sean Dorsey Dance’s touring performances of THE MISSING GENERATION – and also travel as stand-alone residencies. Bring Generations Positive to YOUR community: Contact us to bring Generations Positive to YOUR community.
GENERATIONS POSITIVE RESIDENCY ACTIVITIES INCLUDE:
TRANS-FRIENDLY DANCE WORKSHOPS: TERRIFIED BEGINNERS WELCOME!
– This 2-3 hour workshop is led by trans choreographer Sean Dorsey and his all-LGBTQ company of dancers. We lead participants through meditation, gentle warmups, modern dance terminology and phrases, and teach simplified Sean Dorsey Dance repertory and choreography.
– Participant Surveys show that this has been the first-ever dance class/workshop for many of our 400+ trans and gender-non-conforming participants to date.
– Why do we use the phrase “terrified beginner”? Many transpeople have never set foot in a dance class, yoga studio or gym since these spaces are at best unwelcoming and at worst, hostile and physically unsafe for us transpeople (especially if we do not conform to binary gender expression or do not “pass” as male or female).
– Non-gendered bathrooms and private changing areas are provided; no touch is involved.

“Dance Your Story!” – Dance and Self-Expression Workshops
– This 3-hour workshop led by Sean Dorsey and SDD dancers leads transgender, gender-non-conforming and queer people through dance warmups and movement, phrase-building and creative writing exercises; participants then create and share short pieces telling their own story. Terrified beginners are especially welcome!

– These 2-4 hour inter-generational community forums bring LGBTQ elders and longtime AIDS survivors together in conversation with LGBTQ youth.
